The Sound of Silence

"...And the vision that was planted in my brain
Still remains
Within the sound of silence."
Simon and Garfunkel "The Sound of Silence" 1964

Is silence merely the absence of sound or perhaps the presence of something mysterious?

Silence is a rare thing. Even so, when given an opportunity to experience silence I often avoid it. I take comfort in music when I am alone. Songs of birds, rivers, or people.

Silence allows space for thoughts and emotions to creep in; uncomfortable and dreadful. Noise and busy-ness insulate me - numbing the pain and fears I avoid.

There are rarer times in silence when I hear a still, small voice. I am oddly at peace in those moments. There is sound but not noise.

Recently as I slept in a cabin in the woods, soft rain fell.

I awoke before dawn. I heard no noise. No traffic, no music, no conversation. No internal noise or anxiety of things remaining undone. Only the still small voice of my Father that said "rest; be at peace and enjoy my creation".  Peace - within the sound of silence...

Silence can certainly be unnerving. Glad you found some and embraced it. How was beavers bend?

It was great...hard to leave. And fortunately I was able to enjoy it before they opened the spillway for repairs, which caused no small amount of consternation and danger for those who were in the river that day.
